Battlefield 2 Giant Grid O' Death

Lessons: soldiers' small arms are pretty much for shooting other soldiers, especially in the head. Even shooting at jeeps is something of a waste, though worthwhile for the chance of hitting the soldiers themselves. Grenades against tanks or APCs is not a real winner. The heavy machine gun is worthwhile against aircraft of all types, the light machine guns are weak. The APC cannon is surprisingly effective against tank tracks. For antitank, shoot tanks in the tracks or rear, it's about twice as effective as the front; APCs have the same armor all around. Antitank soldiers' rockets are the exact same as APC rockets. Antitank emplacements are about twice as effective as other antitank and tank vs. tank weapons. The mobile antiair cannons do well against jets (if you can time it right and actually hit, good luck with that), but fairly useless against APCs and tanks (though the US M6 Linebacker does not totally stink). The US transport helicopter guns can be used against APCs and mobile AAs, as can all attack helicopter cannons (aircraft autocannons, not so much). Aircraft laser guided missiles can destroy installations (UAVs, etc.) and bridges in a single hit, two aircraft bombs will do the same, and TV guided helicopter missiles need a little more than 2 hits. Artillery kills APCs and tanks with only a direct hit, otherwise doesn't do that much damage with a near miss.

Special Forces Expansion: The new vehicles in the Special Forces expansion have been put in a separate chart following the main chart. The new weapons are shown italicized. The new SAS MG36 support gun has the same damage characteristics as the normal assault rifle (though shoots slower), so is listed there. Similarly, the new SAS G36E medic gun does the same damage as the unlocked SA80 medic gun, though shoots faster. The Hummer's TOW and RPG rocket are the same as an APC rocket and AntiTank kit round. The BMP3 gun is the same as a tank gun. On the defense, the Hind helicopter, being an attack/transport helicopter, is about halfway between the defense of each. The BMP3's defenses are a little strange, with the sides being stronger than the front.

Details: What is listed here is the maximum damage for a weapon, shown as the number of hits needed to kill or destroy the defender. So, the lower the better. 0.0 hits means less that 0.1 hits destroys it, i.e. it's nuked. Assault, Antitank, and Support soldiers have armor, the rest do not. Shotgun results are shown for a single shot with a burst of 8 pellets all hitting (which just about never happens). Weapons such as shotguns and pistols have damage that drops off with range; pistols start to drop at 100 meters, going to half damage (and staying there) at 200 meters; shotguns drop at 30-40 meters, going to half at 100 meters. Also, the angle at which a shot hits a surface matters: straight on gives full damage, a glancing angle does less (it's the cosine of the angle compared to the surface normal, so a 45 degree angle does 71% damage). Vehicles have a "burn" damage level that's not shown by this chart; when a vehicle is 90% or more destroyed, it starts to burn on its own and needs no further damage to be destroyed. The values here separate out the explosion effect from the contact effect; in reality vehicles will take both explosion and contact damage. Just use the smaller value of the two as a close approximation of how many hits kills. Explosion damage usually drops off linearly with the distance to the center of the vehicle or soldier from the point of impact.

Deaths Per Second

Let's compute deaths per second, basically how fast a small arms class weapon can kill if aimed perfectly, dead-on, in range, etc. The higher the number the better, as it's how many soldiers die per second if shot in that area. Some of these numbers are entirely bogus, i.e. sniper rifles have a rate of fire of 600 rounds per minute, but you just can't mouse click shots off that fast. And of course this table doesn't take into account shot deviation, time to equip the weapon, number of shots, time to reload, etc. So take these with a huge grain of salt. If you want more information about all the small arms (though without much explanation), check out this page, and this one. Fun fact: a live soldier has 100 hitpoints. A critically wounded one has 320 more, before officially killed.

Loose Ends and Caveats

This data was derived from the objects_server.zip .tweak files in BF2 for patch version 1.03, along with some manual testing and verification. Also, the inflatable boat is represented by just an "average" material; it's actually made of many materials (and boy is that rubber invulnerable to bullets!). Finally, I had to do some hand-fudging of the computation program so that the defibrillator and knife couldn't be used on tanks, UAVs, etc. Long and short: there are still (for me) a number of mysteries about the new .tweak script formulas, so some of these numbers may be way off. If you find an easily-testable situation where a number is ridiculous, please let me know and I'll try to figure out what went wrong.

Some examples: Mines and claymores are, bizarrely enough, very much destroyable by tank guns and APC cannons (though not HMGs or other small arms), but the weapons grid computations I've tried don't match this effect, so are not included here.

For Modders Only: (of course now you'll all read it) The formula I'm using for damage is simply the damage modifier times the damage value of the weapon. The damage modifier is 1.0 by default, and is set by setting MaterialManager.damageMod for a cell in the materialManagerSettings.con file. Each defined cell has an attack material, from ObjectTemplate.material, and a defense material, from ObjectTemplate.mapMaterial. The damage value for a weapon is from ObjectTemplate.damage. For explosions, the attack material is set by ObjectTemplate.detonation.explosionMaterial, and damage by ObjectTemplate.detonation.explosionDamage. The defensive material for explosions is ObjectTemplate.armor.explosionMaterial (for soldiers, ObjectTemplate.armor.defaultMaterial). The number of hitpoints something can absorb is from ObjectTemplate.armor.maxHitPoints (though really this is always equal to ObjectTemplate.armor.hitPoints).
